Place of wonder

The laid-back coastal town of St Lucia is mainly used as a base, starting point, or hub from which to explore the seemingly never-ending range of sights, attractions and activities on offer in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Formerly known as the Great St Lucia Wetlands Park, in 2007 this piece of paradise was renamed the iSimangaliso Wetland Park to better reflect its unique African identity and to avoid confusion with the Caribbean island country of St Lucia.

Crocodiles and hippos live in the Estuary which borders the town and joins the crashing waves and warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Hippos are known to roam the quieter streets of town and you are wise not to antagonize them.

The town is popular with anglers and is home to an assortment of bait and tackle shops as well as many seafood restaurants and several tour companies that will happily organize outdoor adventure for you.
